Introducing Advanced Threat Protection

Here is something that we have been waited for a while. It was finally publicly announced on 8th of April and you can find more details about it on Office Blog.
There is a really cool video with Shobhit Sahay, Product Manager for Office 365, that is explaining all the bits and pieces of this new feature.

What you will need to understand is that ATP is designed to be another layer of protection, on top of existing EOP. This feature is designed to target specific types of advanced threats. Right now, the service is in private view mode and it will be enabled for commercial customers sometime this year.

As a summary, we have the following three benefits:

  • Protection against unknown malware and viruses
This will use a sandbox environment to analyze attachment behavior before delivering them to the mailbox
  • Real time, time-of-click protection against malicious URLs
This is useful for times when the URL will be changed by the attacker after the mail has been delivered. It is not a proxy, it basically changes the URL that you have in you mailbox to an internal one that eventually blocks the URL if something malicious gets detected at the other end.
  • Rich reporting and URL trace capabilities
You can get reports of how your users are accessing different URLs from their mailboxes for getting a clear picture on what type of users are getting targeted. Also, you can have more details on what messages have been blocked due to an unknown virus or malware

Enjoy!
